What players fight over
Land tiles change color by owner. Unclaimed tiles are called out in the spawn UI as plains or similar, sometimes with a nearby-nation count. Water is how ports and warships matter. A corner of the map with open land is the beginner recommendation from TheGamesEdge and from the spawn label itself.
